The New Studio Build Diary: Phase 2 – Painting & Floors

Ok, the framing is complete, brand new electrical wiring is installed throughout the studio, the walls are up & all seams have been sealed with OSI SC-175 Acoustical Sound Sealant. Now it’s time for the painting to begin.
First, I rented a paint sprayer from Home Depot to “black-out” the ceiling and all of the steel beams. As you can see (by my “mirror pic”), black paint was everywhere!

I consulted with the amazing Scott Weaver on the interior design of the new space. I wanted to spend a good bit of time & effort in this area so that the new space feels comfortable & vibey – not stuffy or uptight at all.

“No white walls & beige furniture in this mix. When this project is completed, I can safely say, it will by one of the most styley recording joints in town. Yeah, I said it. ;).” – Scott Weaver

Colors, new furniture, cool lighting, etc… everything was up for discussion. We decided on these 4 colors for the 2 main recording spaces. Orange in the control room; brown & red for the live room. That deep violet will be part of an upcoming stripe on one of the brown walls. This is gonna be fresh!

The orange is definitely looking good & was going on super easy! Notice that the plastic tarps on the floor are completely black? That is overspray from painting the ceiling. Steve said that there’d be a slight dust, I don’t know about that – just as much was on the floor as was on the ceiling…

Gotta keep those lines straight, so Christopher Holston came in to do the cut-lines around the edges.

The walls in here were looking pretty good after 2 coats of paint. 1 more coat to go.

These 2 pics are of the brown walls in the live room. It really was a great choice. Once the lighting is done, it’s going to look great in here.

I applied a Black Walnut acid stain to the concrete floors throughout the space. This would take a few steps. First the application of the stain, second neutralizing the stain (mopping the area with a baking soda & water mix) then using the shopvac to get up the excess. Me & Shante repeated this process about 3 times…

Just finished the concrete stain in the live room. Now, I need to let it dry for about 24 hours & seal it with the clear coat.

Two coats of clear coat seal were applied. I couldn’t be more pleased with the way the floors turned out – It took a few days, but I think it was well worth it! The floors have some real character…
